Whether you measure your gift in minutes or hours, we truly appreciate every moment that you contribute.

No crazy time demands. No drama. Just parents coming together in whatever ways they can

to help make our school a community and our kids enriched. That’s good stuff. Please come join us.

Volunteer Interest Form


Multicultural/Passport to Sommer (Chairperson: Marta Pinheiro/Khushbu Kapasi):

Help teach our children about the varied cultures in our wonderfully diverse Sommer Community. Projects include: monthly bulletin boards; global postcard project; booths and performances during Passport to Sommer. Passport to Sommer is a multicultural event that includes parent led booths, a Stallion choir performance, multicultural performances, food trucks, and more. Volunteer needs include: plan event activities; plan/prep decorations; schedule food trucks; publicize the event; volunteer at the event; set-up and clean up. Additional volunteers will be recruited to run the day of the event.

Carnival (Chairpersons:  Vacant):

This committee organizes and facilitates the spring Carnival. Volunteer needs include: researching and selecting food and game vendors; finding Carnival sponsors; deciding on games and booths; purchasing materials for games and prizes; marketing Carnival, preparing signs and decorations; volunteering at the event; set-up and clean up. Timeline: Late winter and early spring (Event is in April)

Clothes Closet/Community Service (Chairperson: Lia Thimmig Milos):

The RRISD Clothes Closet is housed at Voigt Elementary and offers free clothing to RRISD students and families in need. Volunteers are needed to help fill Sommer’s monthly 2 hour shift at the Clothes Closet. This committee also plans and coordinates a school community service project for our students.

Timeline: Flexible, volunteer shifts available throughout the school year

 

Fall Fundraiser (Chairperson: Beth Fitzmaurice):

Assist with our annual PTA fundraiser. Needs include: create brochures and market the fundraiser; help decorate hallways; track daily donations and assist with daily deposits; track classroom goals; coordinate and communicate final class and school-wide prizes.
Timeline: Early fall

Healthy Lifestyles (Chairperson: Erin DeRosa):

Take an important role in our school to promote health and wellness. Help our students create healthy habits to support their future growth and development through reward programs, activities, and education.
Timeline: Flexible. Opportunities available throughout the year

Library (Chairperson: Monica Tabor/Karen Vest):

Volunteers are needed weekly to assist with shelving books in the main library. Also assist with Book Fairs and special projects.
Timeline: Opportunities available throughout the year, typically 1-2 hour shifts

Math Superstars (MSS) (Chairperson: Manjula Muraleedhar/Jennifer Chen):

MSS is a voluntary math enrichment program sponsored by the Sommer Elementary PTA.  This program encourages students to practice math online each week to improve their skills.  Small rewards are given for reaching various milestones throughout the 20 week program. Volunteers come to school on Monday or Tuesday each time there is a reward to distribute rewards to teachers' mailboxes.  This will occur 8 times a year on average. Additional help is needed for a few one-time events throughout the year, including our end of program ice cream party in April. Time commitment: 30 min-1 hour on Monday or Tuesday, 4 times each in the fall and spring semester.

 

Movie Nights (Chairperson: Divya Rao):

Twice a year, PTA hosts a “Movie Night” and invites our students and parents to come for a fun night of watching a movie on the floor of the Sommer cafeteria. Movie admission and popcorn are free. Dinner and treats available for purchase from food trucks and the PTA concession stand. Volunteers are needed to help plan two movie nights (October and February).  Volunteer jobs include: selecting movies; scheduling food vendors; promoting the event; purchasing and selling concessions; set-up and clean up.
Timeline: Sept/Oct and Jan/Feb

On Call – General Volunteer:

As an “on call” volunteer, you’ll be notified of volunteer needs in all areas. There’s no obligation to help, but by registering as an “on call” volunteer, you’ll be notified of all general volunteer opportunities as they become available. When you see one that appeals to you and fits your schedule, just sign up.

Reflections Art Program (Chairperson: Priya Arunkumar):

“Reflections” is a fine arts competition for students and is sponsored by the National PTA. Students may submit original works of art in the categories of dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography, and/or visual arts. Judging starts at the school level with the possibility of progressing to the district, state, or national level of recognition. Volunteers organize and execute the program according to RRISD guidelines.

Spelling Bee (Chairperson: Suneeta Belforte):

Help our Stallions showcase their spelling talents in our school spelling bee. Volunteers will help organize, promote and run the spelling bee.
Timeline: Fall

Spirit Events (Chairperson: Dianna Finch/Valerie Tsui):

Help raise money for our school while providing an opportunity for Sommer families to get together and have fun. For these events, local businesses give back to Sommer PTA by sharing a portion of their sales with our PTA. Some past events have included Texas Stars Hockey games, Round Rock Express games, and Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt. Volunteer jobs include: help organize, schedule, and advertise events throughout the school year.

Teacher Appreciation (Chairperson: Kelly Gumbert/Jesica Pruitt):

Help us show our staff how much we appreciate all of their hard work. Volunteers may help with staff luncheons, Teacher Appreciation Week and/or coffee carts.

Yearbook (Chairperson: Kristi Isaacs):

Help to promote yearbook sales and assist with publisher’s website.  Photographers needed (and, no, you don’t need to be a pro!) to take photos at school events, school clubs, etc.
